Exclusive Interview With Elepharmers [Electric Valley Records]

Coming through the space and time continuum, Italy’s stoner rock trio Elepharmers recently released a new (and epic) mini-LP called Lords Of Galaxia. We sat down with Andrea Cadeddu and Guido “El Chino” Solinas from the band and discussed their new album, signing to Electric Valley Records, where they come from and much more!

MHW: Thanks for taking the time to answer a few of our questions and congratulations on the release of Lords Of The Galaxia! For those that may not be too familiar, tell us a little about yourselves!

ELEPHARMERS:

G: we are a stoner rock trio: the sound of the 70's hard rock, mixed with space-rock suggestions, psychedelic rock and doom. We come from Sardinia, a large island in the middle of West-Mediterranean Sea, south of Europe. A land of wild landscapes, sunny beaches, ancient forest and mysterious megalithic sites. Sardinia is a place where modernity meets tradition, and sometimes they clash. In this area, since the Bronze Age, we have had a great mix of cultures, from Europe, Africa and Middle-east.

MHW: Why Elepharmers? Where did the name come from?

ELEPHARMERS:

G: I've always been intrigued by the elephant and his symbolic image. I proposed to look for a name with the word "Elephant" in it, and Andrea did the rest.

A: Yes, it's a mix between the words "Elephant" and "farmers". Literally it doesn't mean anything, but i like to  think "Elephants" are Heavy riffs, and we are the good "farmers" taking care of them !!

Elepharmers is: Guido “El Chino” Solinas – rhythm guitar, vocals & octaver bass, Andrea Cadeddu – lead guitars and Maurizio Mura - drums

MHW: What was the driving influential force for Lords Of Galaxia?

ELEPHARMERS:

G: Since our first album, we are following a path, trying to build up our own style. Last year, after two weeks of tour through Europe, we came back to Sardinia very excited, feel much like writing down new music. We didn't know a that time if we were going to record a split with another band, an EP or LP. We only knew we had many ideas. We tried to get ispiration from Space rock, for both lyrics and music, as we already did on "Weird tales from the third planet" and "Erebus"

MHW: LOG seems like an opus of an album. What was the songwriting process like?

ELEPHARMERS:

G: We wrote the songs of Lords of Galaxia in about 6 months. Since the beginning it was clear we wanted a concept album following the theme of "the theory of ancients astronauts" and Sci-fi. We composed part of the songs all together in our rehearsal room, while the other part of the tracks was recorded at my place and then developed with my mates. Maurizio and Andrea are more trained than me on arrangements. At the same time i worked on lyrics. Since the theme was a "concept", all arguments were clear. This has been really helpful but hard at the same time. But above all, it's been challenging ! A big help came from our illustrator, Andrea Cara at Inkline, who represented perfectly all themes of Lords of Galaxia.

MHW: You add a certain element of space and astronomical storytelling into your lyricism. Could you expand on that as well as other main lyrical themes to your music?

ELEPHARMERS:

G: The guidelines of our music are clearly stoner, heavy rock, space and psych rock, while the lyrics have been inspired by sort of a "space-related mysticism", we are fascinated by outer space and it moves our fantasy and imagination, as it has always been for mankind since the dawn of time.

Lords of Galaxia is divided in 2 parts (Side A- Side B) and 6 chapters (3 tracks on each side).

The first part talks about Annunaki, biblical Nephilims, the "fallen angels".

According to the theories of Zecharia Sitchin, an alien civilization came to earth ages ago. It gave birth to the human race and started the first societies in Mesopotamia, Egypt and Central America. Alternative archeology gives a different interpretation of holy books, finding different meanings and going beyond mysticism.

The second part is dedicated to Isaac's Asimov Sci-fi, to his characters and epic sagas, in particular "Foundation trilogy" and "Robot series".

MHW: This is your first album on Electric Valley Records. How was the change to a new label?

ELEPHARMERS:

A: We decided to start this new adventure with Marco (Electric Valley records) because we were impressed by the passion and devotion he manages the label and every single production with. We know each other since many years, we come from the same land and we had the opportunity to live together through many music- related situations.

He's a really good guy and a dedicated professional. When he asked us to join the label, we had no doubts !

“Next November we will hit north Europe for 2 weeks of tour...”

MHW: What are your thoughts on the recent focus on the doom/stoner style of music in the past 3 years since you released Erebus?

ELEPHARMERS:

A: Honestly I think there has been a steady growth of attention given to this style of music since more than 3 years. That scene had a constant, sometimes exponential, development during the last 10 years. The big contribution many agencies and record labels makes is remarkable.

This has given rise to many new festivals, venues and clubs supporting that kind of music but above all, tons of new bands found a perfect "breeding ground".

Actually it's so hard to keep track these days !!!

MHW: Just for fun, you are booked for a co-headlining “Space Trip” event with Church Of The Cosmic Skull and Brother Bill lets you choose any band, living or dead, that can join. Which band would you choose?

ELEPHARMERS:

A: I would like to invite "All them witches", a young american band from Nashville. I love their dark sound and the awesome songwriting. Starting from country music, they have developed a unique compositive style.Chapeau !!

G: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard ! They're incredible and they are giving a breakthrough to space rock. They are a  rock orchestra with a ongoing groove and psychedelic atmospheres

MHW: Is there anything else you would like to add?

ELEPHARMERS:

A. Sure ! Next November we will hit north Europe for 2 weeks of tour! For us is always a big event. We live on an island which is not well connected to the mainland. Every time we move, it costs a lot of time and money.

We will keep you updated for the next shows and if you want to invite us to festival or other shows, we are always ready!!!

MHW: We thank you again for taking the time to speak with us. We wish you all the best on your future travels and adventures moving forward!
